Welcome Message from Symposium Chair

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I am pleased to welcome you to the 3rd International Symposium on Memory Devices for Abundant Data Computing online. The abundant data computing growth rate has gone from strength to strength over the last few years with the last decades. It has been expected to some jobs will be greatly influenced even affected by Artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. AI makes it possible to perform human-like tasks through computing systems. But the most creative machine learning algorithms are hamstrung by machines that cannot harness their power. The computing systems based on silicon CMOS technology and Von Neumann architecture are running into their physical limits. The data transfer between the physically separated processor and memory units greatly limit the computation speed and energy efficiency. Moving data to and from memory slows down deep learning network training. It is highly imperative to find analogue devices that can combine memory and computation for neuromorphic computing progress. Memory device can potentially meet this requirement.

Inspired by these scientific and technological issues, we initiated the 1st International Symposium on Memory Devices for Abundant Data Computing at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University during 22-24 September, 2017. The symposium is to not only bring worldwide researchers in this field to share their state-of-the-art results, but also promote the inter-institutional collaborations among the local Universities as well as industry on important scientific and technological topics. Following the 1st symposium, we held the 2nd one during Aug. 31 - Sep. 1, 2018 at the city of Ji’An (Jiangxi Province), featuring feature leading figures in memory devices and brain-inspired computing. The existing worldwide pandemic situation makes it very difficult to hold the symposium in a face-to-face manner. The organization committee of symposium discussed for a few times and evaluated the unpredicted factors in the coming months, and decides to hold the symposium during 26-29 May, 2021 in the online mode.

I would particularly like to extend our gratitude to our sponsor, Croucher Foundation, for providing us strong support during this hard time. I would like to thank my fellow members of the Organizing Committee to take on many of the responsibilities. I would like to thank our invited speakers for agreeing to take time out of their busy schedules to give us their perspectives on a broad-ranging set of topics. I would like to sincerely thank our symposium secretary, Debbie Leung who has helped me for designing symposium website and supporting in many aspects.

I sincerely hope that you will enjoy the Technical Program about to unfold in the next few days, and that you will leave fond memories of our symposium through the scientific exchanges you engaged in while you attended.
